Former Santa Cruz mayor Katherine Beiers, 72, won her
division Monday in the 109th Boston Marathon, a race 15 Santa
Cruz County runners completed.
Beiers finished the 26.2-mile course in 4 hours, 54 minutes,
52 seconds to place first among women ages 70 and over.
Seabright’s Kim Fitchen-Young, the women’s winner of the 2004
Wharf to Wharf, also made an impressive effort. Fitchen-Young,
36, finished the 26.2-mile course in 2:56:40 seconds, good for
28th among women, 24th among the 4,099 in her 18-39 age group
and 453rd overall. Felton’s Chris Zieman, 33, topped the local
men with his 3:17:28 time, which put him 1,901st among the
race’s 20,453 entrants. Peter Huemer, 37, of Santa Cruz
wasn’t far behind in 3:19:44.
Also completing the race from Santa Cruz were: Steve Laufer,
47 (3:40:27); Kimberly Thomas, 39 (3:52:43); Eve Schaeffer, 25
(3:53:07); David Rossum, 55 (4:06:21); and Holly Bennett, 37
(4:28:02). Aptos finishers included: Ron Smith, 56 (3:40:22);
Stephany Marks, 34 (4:08:58); Ed Malley, 58 (4:48:12); Ron
Kobrine, 68 (5:31:42); and Eileen Shea, 47 (5:45:41).
